Advice for Children and Young People

About bullying concerns

If the bullying takes place in school or on the journey to or from school

  • Tell the member of staff with responsibility for anti bullying or the class teacher.
  • If serious you may need to speak to the headteacher.
  • Request that you are kept informed and inform the school of any further concerns.
  • Request a copy of the school`s anti-bullying policy which will explain the school`s procedures.
  • If you believe a crime has been committed inform the police (always ask for a crime number).

You are not alone if you are a victim of bullying

Bullying is harmful. Do not put up with it

Bullies feel powerful because they are able to scare you

Bullying takes many forms from violence to verbal abuse to social exclusion.

You can be bullied, harassed or abused for any reason e.g.

Race

Family Background

Home circumstances

Being cleaver or good at an activity

Your sexuality

Colour of your hair

Life style clique e.g. Chav, Fresh, Mosher

In fact anything can get you picked on!

Tell someone

In school a buddy or peer mentor will give advice.
A teacher, learning mentor, your school’s anti bullying co-ordinator, youth worker, connexions advisor. All adults who work with young people will offer support.

Your parents and family members will be able to help and get advice and support.

Body language

Walk tall, look the bully in the eye.

Walk away

Walk quickly to a safer place where there are people around. If desperate go into a shop and ask them to call your parents or the police.

Stay in a group

Stay with friends. Take a longer route home from school and avoid isolated areas or snickets. Keep together.

On the Bus

Sit downstairs near the driver. Bullies can be banned from buses.

Sharing secrets

Be careful what you tell in confidence. If you fall out with friends can use secrets to hurt you.
